Tata Nexon, Curvv, Sierra and Harrier EVs get BaaS option

Tata Motors has extended its Battery-as-a-Service scheme to four more electric cars: the Nexon EV, Curvv EV, Sierra EV, and Harrier EV. Until now BaaS was only available on the Tiago EV and Punch EV. If you have been holding off on an EV because the upfront cost stings, this changes the math starting today.

What BaaS actually means for your wallet

Under BaaS, you buy the car without the battery, which brings the purchase price down noticeably. You then pay a separate monthly fee for the battery, based on its size and the kilometres you expect to cover. The idea is that the barrier of writing one very large cheque disappears, even if your total outgo over time depends on how much you drive.

Which models now qualify

Tata has confirmed the scheme for its entire electric passenger car range. The four cars now added are:

• Tata Nexon EV
• Tata Curvv EV
• Tata Sierra EV
• Tata Harrier EV

The Tiago EV and Punch EV were already available under BaaS and continue to be. Exact pricing for each model under BaaS has not been announced, so check with your nearest Tata dealer for the split between the ex-battery car price and the monthly battery rental figure.

Who should actually consider this

BaaS makes most sense if you drive a predictable number of kilometres each month and want a lower EMI on the car loan itself. If your monthly mileage swings a lot, or if you plan to keep the car for many years, it is worth sitting down and totalling both the car EMI and the battery fee against a straightforward full purchase before signing anything. Neither path is wrong, but one of them will be cheaper for your specific usage.

What buyers should do right now

Tata showrooms should already have the updated pricing available. Ask specifically for the BaaS break-up on whichever model you are considering, since the monthly battery cost varies by battery pack size and the kilometre slab you choose. Do not assume the Nexon EV figure applies to the Harrier EV or the Curvv EV — the batteries are different sizes, so the monthly fee will differ too.
