How it works
- 1Press clutch → friction disc separates from flywheel (engine freewheels from gearbox).
- 2Move gear lever → shift fork + synchromesh mesh the chosen gear pair.
- 3Release clutch → disc re-engages; torque flows at the new ratio to the wheels.
- 4Low gears = more torque for launch/hills; high gears = quieter, efficient cruise.
Ownership note
Still common on budget hatchbacks and some SUVs. Great if your commute is mixed highway; painful if it’s 90 minutes of pure city crawl.
