VinFast VF3 VF6 VF7 India localisation plans put on hold

VinFast has put deeper India localisation work for the VF3, VF6 and VF7 on hold while it reviews development costs. The move affects supplier work on locally sourced components, but it does not mean the VF6 and VF7 currently being assembled in India are being withdrawn.

VF3, VF6 And VF7 Work Paused

VinFast had been working with suppliers in India to develop and source parts for the three models. A July instruction asked suppliers to stop activities linked to these programmes and provide details of money already spent on tooling, engineering and materials.

The issue is that VinFast was unable to reach its targeted component development costs in India. The pause is temporary, so the three programmes have not been cancelled. For buyers, however, a longer localisation pause could affect how quickly VinFast can reduce component costs and improve the competitiveness of these EVs.

VF6 And VF7 Sales Continue

The immediate situation is different for the VF6 and VF7, which are already on sale in India. Their assembly at VinFast's Indian facility is continuing.

• The plant can be scaled up to 1.5 lakh vehicles a year
• Around 10,000 vehicles have been sold in India so far

The reported sales figure also includes vehicles supplied to Green SM, VinFast's affiliated ride-hailing company. So the localisation pause is primarily a future product and sourcing issue rather than an immediate change for VF6 and VF7 owners.

VF3 India Plans Are Less Certain

The VF3 faces a bigger question because its compact two-door electric SUV format would target a more affordable part of India's EV market. Local sourcing would be particularly important for keeping such a vehicle's costs under control.

VinFast has not said the VF3 is cancelled for India, but there is no clear timeline for restarting its India localisation work. That leaves its eventual positioning and timing uncertain.

VinFast Wants India-Specific EVs

VinFast continues to position India as an important manufacturing and business market. The company says it wants to develop India-specific EVs using local market research and customer feedback.

A new VinFast test mule has also been spotted in India, resembling the international VF5 but with visible changes. It is too early to establish whether this vehicle will become an India-specific product.
