Mahindra Nagpur Plant: What the 2028 Factory Means for SUVs

Mahindra is moving ahead with possession of around 800 acres at Additional Butibori in Nagpur for a much larger 1,500-acre manufacturing complex. For buyers, the important part is that this will not be an EV-only plant, so future Mahindra SUVs could be built around changing demand for ICE and electric powertrains.

Nagpur plant capacity

The full project carries an investment of ₹15,000 crore and is planned to start production in 2028. Once developed, it is expected to have capacity for more than 5 lakh vehicles and 1 lakh tractors every year, taking total installed capacity above 6 lakh units annually.

NU_IQ SUVs are part of the plan

Mahindra has confirmed that its next-generation NU_IQ architecture will be supported at the new facility. The platform is intended for multiple upcoming SUVs, while concepts such as Vision S, Vision T, Vision X and Vision SXT have already shown the direction of this future product family.

There is no model-wise production allocation yet, so it is too early to say which individual SUV will be built in Nagpur. The 2028 start does, however, line up with Mahindra's wider next-generation SUV plans.

ICE and EVs on one site

For buyers, I think the flexible manufacturing approach is more interesting than the size of the land parcel alone. Mahindra is planning a factory that can handle internal-combustion vehicles as well as battery-electric and other future technologies, rather than locking the site to one powertrain.

That gives the company more room to adjust production as Indian demand changes. If ICE SUVs remain strong, capacity can support them, while EV production can be scaled as adoption increases.

Maharashtra supply chain gets bigger

The Nagpur project is also linked to a planned 150-acre supplier park at Sambhajinagar. Components from there are expected to support Chakan and Nashik as well as Nagpur, creating a wider manufacturing network across Maharashtra.

Mahindra is also preparing a dedicated Nagpur skilling centre covering mechanical work, modern manufacturing and multi-powertrain processes. With production still some time away, the real question is how quickly the upcoming SUV range fills this new capacity.
