Maruti Fronx Hybrid Mileage Could Touch 35 kmpl in India

Hybrid technology could soon move into India's more affordable compact SUV space, with the Maruti Suzuki Fronx, Kia Sonet, Renault Bridger and a possible Hyundai Venue among the models being linked to electrified powertrains. For buyers who want better fuel economy without depending on charging, the key question is how much of the projected 30 kmpl-plus mileage will actually make it into production cars.

Maruti Fronx Hybrid could lead the shift

The Fronx is expected to be the first smaller Maruti model to use Suzuki's locally developed strong-hybrid system. The proposed setup uses a 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol engine mainly as a generator, with an electric motor driving the wheels.

Projected efficiency is around 35-40 kmpl on the test cycle, although that is not a final certified figure. The locally developed system is also intended to keep hybrid technology more affordable than the systems currently used in larger hybrids.

Kia Sonet Hybrid launch timeline

Kia has confirmed that hybrid powertrains will eventually come to locally produced models including the Sonet. The second-generation Sonet is expected in 2027, but the hybrid version is currently indicated for around 2028-29.

The important point is that Kia has confirmed the hybrid programme, while its engine, battery and mileage figures have not been announced. Claims of more than 30 kmpl should therefore be treated as estimates for now.

Renault Bridger and Hyundai Venue plans

Renault's Bridger is expected to arrive by the end of 2027 on the R-GMP architecture, which supports multiple propulsion options. Renault is also developing a 1.2-litre petrol engine family for turbo-petrol, CNG and electrified applications, but there is no confirmed hybrid mileage figure yet.

A Hyundai Venue Hybrid is less certain. Hyundai is linked with future hybridisation, but a Venue hybrid specification and timeline have not been formally confirmed. Any 30+ kmpl figure for the Venue remains speculative.
