Mercedes-AMG GT SUV revealed with up to 1169hp, three variants confirmed
Illustration generated by Turbo Truth.
Mercedes has officially revealed the AMG GT SUV, calling it the first full-size SUV the brand has developed entirely in-house. The five-seat electric performance SUV shares its platform with the fully electric AMG GT 4-Door Coupe and will arrive in three variants: GT 53, GT 55, and GT 63. No prices or India launch timeline have been announced yet.
What Mercedes has confirmed so far
The AMG GT SUV is a full-size, five-seat electric vehicle, not a derivative of an existing SUV line. The GT 63 sits at the top of the range and produces up to 1,169hp, making it one of the most powerful production SUVs ever announced. The GT 53 will be the first variant to reach showrooms, with the GT 55 and GT 63 following later.
The three variants at a glance
Here is what has been confirmed across the GT SUV range so far:
- GT 53: entry variant, first to go on sale
- GT 55: mid-range option, on sale after the GT 53
- GT 63: flagship, up to 1,169hp, arrives last
- Platform: shared with the AMG GT 4-Door Coupe
- Body: full-size, five-seat SUV built entirely in-house by Mercedes-AMG
No pricing or battery figures for any of the three variants have been released at this stage.
Why the GT 4-Door Coupe does not tell you what to expect
It is tempting to carry over figures from the AMG GT 4-Door Coupe, but Mercedes has not confirmed that the SUV shares its battery capacity, range, or charging speeds. The platform is common, but the SUV body and its additional weight will affect those numbers. Until Mercedes publishes specifications for each GT SUV variant, any figures you read elsewhere are guesswork.
What Indian buyers should watch for
Mercedes-Benz India has not announced whether or which GT SUV variant will come to India, or when. Given that the GT 53 is first to market globally, that would likely be the first candidate for any Indian allocation. If you are in the market for a high-performance electric SUV right now, the EQS SUV and the AMG EQE SUV are the options currently available through Mercedes-Benz India dealers. The AMG GT SUV is a watch-this-space story for the moment.
Are you holding off on an EV SUV purchase waiting for something like this, or does 1,169hp feel like overkill for Indian roads?
