New Jeep SUV Based On Tata Sierra Architecture 2028 Launch

Tata and Stellantis have just signed a definitive agreement to expand their partnership into advanced vehicle technology and architecture. The first product taking shape under this deal is a new midsize Jeep SUV built on Tata Sierra's ARGOS platform, internally codenamed J1J, with both ICE and electric variants. It is expected to debut in the first half of 2028.

What the Agreement Covers

Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles will license its product technology and vehicle architectures to Stellantis. Stellantis will use its engineering capabilities in India to adapt these foundations for different customer needs and regulations. The vehicles developed through this collaboration will be manufactured in India at the existing Ranjangaon joint venture facility between Tata and Stellantis.

The Jeep SUV Details

Sharing the architecture does not mean simply changing badges. The J1J will have a distinct body, exterior design and cabin with changes to seating and features. Both internal combustion and electric versions are planned, likely using Sierra powertrains, and a 4×4 version is also considered. A Pune-based team is working on the programme including left-hand-drive adaptation.

Reviving Jeep In India

In September 2026, Jeep sold just 252 units in India, a 16% drop from the previous year. Its market share slipped to 0.06%, placing it last among the 14 manufacturers listed. Local sourcing through Tata could make the product more cost competitive in this crowded segment.

  • Sales slipped to 0.06% market share among listed manufacturers
  • Production planned at Ranjangaon joint venture facility
  • Launch targeted for first half of 2028
  • Licensing revenue helps Tata spread architecture costs

What Buyers Should Watch

Since the launch is aimed at 2028, this is a longer-term play. Pricing, product execution and after-sales support will be crucial to turning it into sustained sales growth, especially given the current volume struggles.

Would you consider waiting for a Sierra-based Jeep?
