Mercedes Benz GLE L debut hints at luxury trend for buyers

Mercedes-Benz has revealed the long-wheelbase version of its popular luxury SUV, badged as the GLE L, at the Chengdu Motor Show in China. Built locally in China, this stretched variant is tailored specifically around rear-seat comfort, addressing a growing preference among luxury buyers for chauffeur-driven accommodations without stepping up to full-size luxury flagships.

Stretched proportions and cabin highlights

Visually, the GLE L carries over the familiar design language of the standard-wheelbase SUV, retaining the gloss-black grille with chrome accents and tristar motifs, alongside dual-barrel LED headlights. The rear profile is likewise unchanged, sporting wraparound taillights linked by black trim and twin exhaust finishers. The prominent differences on the outside come down to the extended side profile and redesigned alloy wheels.

Turbo petrol powertrain options

Under the hood, Mercedes-Benz is offering the GLE L in two petrol trim levels, both carried over from the standard-wheelbase SUV. The 350 L 4Matic employs a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol unit delivering 258hp and 400Nm of torque. Buyers wanting more performance can opt for the 450 L 4Matic, which packs a 3.0-litre inline-six turbo-petrol motor producing 381hp and 560Nm of torque.

Both engine options incorporate a 48V mild-hybrid assist and send power to all four wheels through a nine-speed automatic transmission. While the standard-wheelbase SUV also provides diesel and plug-in hybrid options in various markets, this extended model focuses entirely on refined mild-hybrid turbo-petrol power.

The Indian market perspective

Mercedes-Benz has not confirmed whether it will bring the long-wheelbase GLE to Indian showrooms. However, the Indian luxury landscape has shown immense appetite for extended-wheelbase models, seen in the overwhelming success of the long-wheelbase E-Class and V-Class. With chauffeur-driven comfort reigning supreme among Indian buyers, a stretched GLE makes strong commercial sense.

The competition is also moving in this direction, as rival BMW is slated to launch a long-wheelbase X5 in India in 2027. Introducing the GLE L could allow Mercedes-Benz to stay ahead of the curve in the competitive luxury SUV segment.
