Honda Compact SUV May Get Horse 1.2L Petrol Hybrid CNG Engine

Honda is considering a new approach for its upcoming compact SUV by sourcing a 1.2-litre engine from Horse Powertrain. The engine family is being discussed with petrol, hybrid and CNG options, which could matter for buyers looking for lower running costs without moving into a larger SUV.

Horse 1.2-litre engine options

The proposed engine would come from Horse Powertrain, a Renault Group and Geely joint venture in which Saudi Aramco is also a shareholder. Horse already has an India connection, with the new Renault Duster due on October 17 using its 1.8-litre hybrid powertrain.

For Honda, the key point is the availability of different fuel and electrification options from one engine family. Developing petrol, hybrid and CNG versions separately would be expensive for a price-sensitive compact SUV, so outsourcing could help Honda cover more buyer requirements.

Honda compact SUV price and timeline

The upcoming Honda compact SUV is being evaluated around an existing Honda platform used in Indonesia. A target price range of Rs 9 lakh to Rs 12 lakh has been discussed, while production is targeted for October 2028. These are project targets, and Honda has not confirmed the SUV or its final specifications.

Honda is also looking to shorten the time needed to develop new models. Its proposed process aims to reduce a full model change from around 49 months to about 30 months, with partners handling more design, engineering, testing and supplier-development work while Honda retains overall vehicle performance and final validation.

What happens to City and Elevate?

Another important part of the plan is the reported cancellation of the PF2 platform project, which had been expected to underpin the next-generation City and Elevate. Honda has not confirmed that change, but it has said both City and Elevate remain important models for India and will continue in the business.
