Tesla Roadster with rocket boosters and ground effects fan explained

Tesla Roadster with rocket boosters and ground effects fan explained

Illustration generated by Turbo Truth.

Tesla has given the world a proper look at what the new Roadster can do when it is fitted with a SpaceX rocket booster package, and the footage has left nearly every car enthusiast on the planet talking. The stunts you have been watching online were done with a specially prepared car and no driver behind the wheel, and Elon Musk himself admitted he was not sure whether putting this on a public road would even be legal.

Two very different Roadsters are on the table

It is important to separate what Tesla is actually selling from what it showed off. The rocket-boosted car, sometimes called the Rocket package, is a special build with thrusters that push it off the ground. That is a stunt vehicle, not a showroom product. What Tesla is promising for buyers is a separate variant called the Performance Roadster, which uses a ground effects fan to pin the car to the road rather than lift it off.

What the ground effects fan actually does

The fan sits underneath the car and works by sucking air downward, creating a low-pressure zone between the floor and the road surface. That extra downforce is meant to give the Performance Roadster cornering grip that a car of this weight and power would otherwise struggle to find. This is not a new idea — Formula One cars used fan-generated downforce decades ago — but putting it into a road car that someone can actually buy is a different matter entirely.

What we know and do not know right now

Tesla has not confirmed the following for the Performance Roadster:

  • A firm on-sale date in any market including India
  • Pricing for either the base Roadster or the Performance variant
  • Battery capacity or official range figures for the new generation
  • Whether the ground effects fan will be standard or an option
  • Any right-hand-drive or India-specific details

The rocket booster package remains a demonstration exercise, and no price or production plan has been announced for it.

What an Indian buyer should do right now

Tesla has been expanding its presence in India, but the Roadster in any form is not close to arriving at a showroom near you. If you are actively in the market this month, the Performance Roadster is not a car to factor into your shortlist. Keep an eye on official Tesla India announcements for when bookings open, and hold off making any decisions based on the stunt footage — that car is not the one being sold.

Are you excited enough about the Performance Roadster to actually wait for it, or is this more of a watch-and-wonder moment for you?
