Indian car buyers looking at long-term ownership need to know that Bharat Stage 7 emission standards could take effect from April 2029. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has approved a six-year implementation schedule ending in April 2035, covering everything from passenger cars to heavy trucks.
Phased rollout timeline for vehicle categories
The proposed rules will roll out in stages across different segments to give manufacturers time to adapt. Passenger vehicles are scheduled to come under the new rules first in April 2029, followed by light commercial vehicles and pick-up vans in 2030, and heavy-duty trucks and buses from April 2031.

- Heavy-duty trucks and buses from April 2031
- Transition period expected to run until April 2035
Particulate measurement and brake emissions
The upcoming regulations align closely with Europe and will target smaller particulate matter by lowering particle-number testing from 23 nanometres down to 10 nanometres. Manufacturers will also need to account for non-exhaust emissions like brake wear and tyre abrasion, which are not captured by traditional exhaust testing.
Real-world compliance and heavy-duty limits
Independent testing agencies are expected to assess cars under real-world driving conditions after purchase rather than relying solely on laboratory tests. Meanwhile, heavy-duty commercial trucks and buses will face stricter reduction targets of 20 to 50 per cent across major pollutants.
How does this timeline affect your next car purchase plan over the next few years?
