The Indian electric two-wheeler market is seeing steady growth this financial year as buyers shift away from petrol scooters. Customer deliveries between April and September have surged by 76 percent to reach 11.2 lakh units, compared to 6.40 lakh units during the same period last year. Total retail sales from January to September have already crossed the 1.61 million mark.
Why electric scooters are selling fast
Rising petrol prices and increasing awareness about daily running costs are pushing more buyers towards battery-powered options. Commuters who travel more than twenty kilometres a day are finding that the initial purchase premium is quickly recovered through lower electricity charging bills.
The rapid pace of demand suggests that total sales for this financial year could reach an estimated 22.6 lakh units. Manufacturers are expanding their dealership networks beyond metro cities to cater to this growing interest in smaller towns.
Things to check before making a booking
With so many new models and brands entering the market, buyers need to evaluate their daily usage before signing a cheque. Taking a long test ride with a pillion rider will give you a better idea of how the suspension and motor handle the extra weight in city traffic. Keep these practical aspects in mind when visiting a showroom:
- Check the real-world range rather than just the certified figures
- Look for manufacturers with a local service centre in your area
- Ask about the battery replacement cost and warranty duration
- Verify the availability of fast charging options if you travel long distances
Is this the right time to buy?
If your daily commute is fixed and you have a dedicated parking spot with a power socket, switching to an electric two-wheeler makes financial sense right now. The technology has matured significantly, and the current crop of scooters offers better reliability and features than the early models.
Buyers who frequently undertake inter-city trips or lack reliable home charging might want to wait for public charging infrastructure to improve further. However, for typical city usage, the current offerings are more than capable of handling everyday errands and office commutes.
Are you planning to replace your petrol scooter with an electric one this festive season?
